"Lyrical and metaphysical at eSTeDe" — Irmina Kosmala

On Saturday 27 March, the "Scena to dziwna" Culture Centre in Gniezno was buzzing. Not only had the day been filled since morning with performances by vocal groups taking part in the annual Review of Poetic and Travel Song, but in the afternoon the organisers had a delicious cultural treat in store for us.

At 4 p.m. came the official opening of an "abstractionist vernissage" by Stanisław Jerzy Dołżyk — painter and minstrel from Warsaw. The artist's remarkable works were inspired by the poetry of Jacek Kaczmarski, so the exhibition in the Estede lobby was lyrical abstraction. Intense colours, bold brushstrokes as if in time with the music, an apparent chaos meant to heighten the sense of movement — all of it took the breath away of everyone gazing at Jerzy Dołżyk's painterly-poetic landscapes.

After the exhibition, the artist and Renata Birska invited the guests into the auditorium, where they treated us to seven of Jacek Kaczmarski's songs, accompanied by the raw sound of a guitar. In the background, a multimedia slideshow of the paintings matched whichever song was being played. That evening we heard, among others, "Rublow," "Autoportret Witkacego," "Wędrówka z cieniem" and "Syn marnotrawny."
