Optimistic Gloom

draft MT — needs author review

They said she was no good, that she talked too much
— well, I’d say, she’s a woman after all.
They said she had a squint
— who doesn’t these days
They said her feet were usually dirty, that hair grew on her chest
— good Lord! even that can be lovely.
But when, after dinner, by candlelight, she took out her dentures for the night
and unstrapped a leg besides,
however hard I tried, I couldn’t manage it,
I sank into an optimistic gloom.
